Stilfserjoch Pass

Stilfserjochstraße

The Stelvio Pass with its 2757m is the highest pass in Italy and the second-highest paved pass in the Alps. The road was built in 1820-1826 by the military – built for strategic reasons. The road was established for the Austria-Hungarian Empire in order to keep free connection from the mother country to the Lombardy.

Today the street is a tourist magnet. With the 48 numbered switchbacks, a length of 24.6 km from Prad and a difference in altitude of 1844 meters above sea level, the Stelvio is considered as a highlight among cyclists.
