Schluderns/Sluderno - Upper Vinschgau valley circular walk with a visit to the Churburg castle

At a glance: A visit to the Churburg castle in Schluderns is one of the highlights for anyone interested in history. Valuable furnishings and a unique collection of arms can be seen. The walk takes you to the castle, then along the Schludernser Waalweg path above the river Saldurbach back to the village. There are numerous restaurants in Schluderns.

Best time: Whole year round, but best in early summer and in autumn

Rewards: a peaceful area, an easy “Waal” path in the shade and a wonderful castle with magnificent views of the Ortler (3899 m)

Effort: easy walk with gentle ascents to the castle and to the “Waal”, suitable for everybody. Total walking time: 2,5 hours. Can also be done in half a day without visiting the castle.

Starting point: Schluderns (920 m) in the Upper Vinschgau valley, parking area in the village, regular busses from Meran.

The route: From
1) Schluderns (Gasthof Rössl) follow the signs for the castle “Churburg” along the cobbled street to the
2) Castle and on to
3) the “Waal” path. This takes you first across meadows, then through forest into the valley Saldurtal. Return along the other side of the valley to the “three crosses” and then back down to the village.
